PLANNED TRI-VALLEY STEM CENTER AT LIVERMORE AIRPORT RECEIVES $500,000 FUNDING COMMITMENT FROM COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBER
Youth-Oriented Informal STEM Learning Center Takes Major Step Towards Fundraising Goals
Livermore, CA, March 7, 2018 --- Robot Garden makerspace received a $500,000 funding commitment from County Councilmember Scott Haggerty to build new hangars at the Livermore Municipal Airport. These hangars will be used for a dedicated youth-oriented informal STEM learning center focused on the many STEM fields within the aviation and aerospace industries. The new STEM Center will provide a wide variety of hands-on activities for project-based learning opportunities for area youth and young adults.
Shawn Wilson, Chief of Staff for Scott Haggerty stated, “We are all in. Our office wholeheartedly supports this project. We are proud to make a donation towards the Tri-Valley STEM Center.”
Tom Manger, president of Robot Garden, stated, “We are very grateful to Councilmember Scott Haggerty for seeing the community benefits this project will provide, then taking a leadership position to get it completed. We have fantastic schools in the Tri-Valley. Our goal is to provide area youth with hands-on project-based learning opportunities outside of regular school hours.”
Mr. Manger further stated, “We are partnering with dozens of local youth, STEM and hobby groups to bring their activities to the public. We are already hosting Girl Scout, Boy Scout, and 4-H groups in our current space. This new STEM Center will allow us to expand our programs with them, bring in more partners and enrich learning opportunities for many more local youth. Engaging youth in these hands-on team activities allows them to refine their technical abilities while learning soft-skills that industries deem equally important.”
Robot Garden makerspace is a community workshop that provides meeting space, equipment, tools, supplies and technical expertise via classes, group projects, and Special Interest Groups.
