Success Stories.

The Tri-Valley STEM Center won't be completed until the summer of 2019. But, we're not idly sitting by waiting for this to happen. Instead, we are busy bringing together a variety of STEM groups & resources so that they can better serve youth and the larger community. We are conducting a "Proof Of Concept" for what will take place in our larger dedicated STEM Center at the Livermore Airport. Here are some of our success stories so far.

A sampling of successful happenings with Robot Garden & our partners.
More to follow!

Aviation Scholarships

Robot Garden sponsors Aviation Explorer Post #997. It is a coed Boy Scout program that teaches youth about careers in aviation & aerospace. One of the young women in the post has won two different scholarships. The first scholarship was for a week long Advanced Aviation Camp at Embry Riddle University in Phoenix, AZ. The second scholarship was for 50 hours of free flight time in a Cessna 172 airplane. These 50 hours include gas and will be used for flight training in pursuit of a private pilots license.

Father / Son Flight Training

One of our Aviation Explorer Post members spent most of his Junior year achieving his Boy Scout Eagle rank. Now that this is completed, he and his dad have embarked on earning their private pilots licenses together. They were inspired by the many positive interactions they've had at the Livermore Airport. They were welcomed by the flying community when they first showed up. Now, they are planning to be official members of that community!

Tech Startup Internship

One of the young women in our Aviation Explorer Post is primarily interested in aerospace but wants to get her pilots license as part of her path to a career as an aerospace engineer. By networking with some of the tech startups in the iGate / Robot Garden cluster, she landed a paid internship with an aerospace startup in Livermore. She spent the summer building prototypes of a small rocket powered drone that does vertical take offs & landings. Don't try that at home!

Low Cost Meeting Space

Flying Electrons, is a 200-member RC-plane club in Tri-Valley, They lost their meeting space when the old airport terminal was shutdown. They then spent two years meeting at a local pizza shop that required a minimum $300 purchase to use their space. $300 for a monthly meeting! Robot Garden coordinated with Five Rivers Aviation at the Livermore Airport to use their meeting room for free. The Flying Electrons are delighted to be meeting back at the airport!

A New Home For Girl Scouts

Girl Scout Troop #30226 is special. Their girls meet weekly to work on robotics, electronics and coding projects. That has been their sole focus for 11 years. They recently lost their meeting space in the home of one of their mentors. Robot Garden made the entire troop a member with its own set of access badges, so that they could use Robot Garden facility and store their supplies there. With a larger space & more resource they have added several new girls to their troop.

A New Home For Boy Scouts

When Livermore Charter High School shut down suddenly in 2017, its robotics team was also shutdown. This adversity didn't stop their enthusiasm! Determined to rebuild their team,  the youth and mentors worked with Robot Garden to start a new Robotics Explorer Post, a coed Boy Scouts program, and used it as a platform to rebuild their First Robotics Team #6059. They now meet at Robot Garden to compete and learn about robotics.

Robotics Badges For Brownies

In November of 2017, the Girl Scouts announced two new STEM badges - Robotics and Mechanical Engineering. Excited to see more girls pursue STEM interests, Robot Garden worked with the local council to become a Girl Scout "Preferred Vendor" so that they can offer activities for Girl Scouts to earn their badges. Robot Garden is now scheduling groups of 150 girls at a time to come in and work on their badges together.
Go Girls!

Summer Camp At The Airport

Robot Garden has worked with Five Rivers Aviation and Spectrum of Science Foundation to schedule two week long aviation Summer camps at the Livermore Airport. Local youth will now be able to spend time at the airport learning about the workings of an airport and how planes manage to stay in the air. The airport community welcomes these youth.

Around The World Solo Flight

Trystan Clark is a teenage flying enthusiast and a member of Aviation Explorer Post #997. He turns 18 in 2019 and is planning to embark on an eight week record setting around-the-world flight. When completed. he will be the youngest pilot to circumnavigate the globe in a single engine airplane. Robot Garden is helping with fundraising and organizing efforts.
Go Trystan!
